Celery is the 2027 Color of the Year. Here's how much paint a Celery room really takes

Sherwin-Williams picked Celery (SW 6421), Behr went olive, and searches for the new greens are surging. What the 2027 colors are, where they work, and exactly how much to buy.

Green has won 2027. On September 15, Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams named Celery (SW 6421) their Color of the Year, a few weeks after Behr announced Grounded, a mossy olive. Valspar went with a soft gray-blue, and Dutch Boy picked a sun-baked terracotta, but most of the big announcements so far sit somewhere on the green side of the fan deck.

People have noticed. In Google Trends, "celery sw 6421 paint color" was one of the fastest-rising US paint searches of the past month, up more than 4,000%, and "sherwin-williams new paint color 2027" showed up as a brand-new breakout search.

If you're tempted, here's what each color actually looks like, where it works, and how much paint to buy before you head to the store.

The 2027 colors of the year so far

Brand Color What it looks like
Sherwin-Williams Celery (SW 6421) A light yellow-green; think khaki, butter yellow and sage mixed together
Behr Grounded (T27-01) A deep olive with moss undertones; sold in matte and satin at The Home Depot
Valspar Cottage Door (8004-38E) A mid-tone powder blue with gray undertones
Dutch Boy Deep Rooted An earthy, mid-toned terracotta orange
Dulux Soulful Sage A paler, brighter sage
Graham & Brown Rose Earth A chalky, dusty pink

The common thread is warmth. After years of gray and greige, the brands are leaning into colors that feel natural and lived-in. Behr's color team told Axios that homeowners "are gravitating toward warmth, color and personality."

Where Celery works (and where it doesn't)

Sherwin-Williams pitches Celery for a few specific jobs:

  • Woodwork and trim. Wainscoting, board and batten, crown molding and doors in satin or semi-gloss.
  • Kitchen cabinets, especially next to natural wood.
  • Walls in rooms with lots of daylight. A yellow-leaning green can turn flat or muddy in a dark north-facing room, so test a large swatch on two walls and look at it morning and evening before you commit.

Grounded is the opposite personality: dark and enveloping. Behr suggests it as an accent wall behind a sofa, in bedrooms, or wrapped around all four walls of a small room so the whole space feels like a wood.

How much paint you need

Here are two common projects, worked out with the same math our paint calculator uses (350 square feet per gallon per coat, which is typical for interior wall paint).

A Celery accent wall, 12 ft wide and 8 ft high

  • Wall area: 12 × 8 = 96 sq ft
  • Two coats: 192 sq ft of coverage
  • Paint needed: 192 ÷ 350 = 0.55 gallons
  • Buy 1 gallon. A quart won't stretch to two coats, and the leftover is perfect for touch-ups.

A whole bedroom, 12 × 14 ft with an 8 ft ceiling, one door and one window

  • Walls: 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 sq ft
  • Minus the door (about 21 sq ft) and window (about 15 sq ft): 380 sq ft
  • Two coats: 760 sq ft ÷ 350 = 2.2 gallons
  • Buy 2 gallons plus 1 quart.

Fun fact: Celery is a light color, and light colors are the hardest to put over dark ones. If you're painting over a deep wall (or going from Grounded back to something pale), a primer coat usually saves you a third coat of the expensive stuff. Tick "Prime first" in the paint calculator and it adds the primer to your shopping list.

Tips before you buy

  1. Get a sample, not a chip. Paper chips can't show how a yellow-green shifts in your light. Paint a 2 × 2 ft swatch, or use a peel-and-stick sample.
  2. Pick the sheen for the room. Matte or eggshell for walls, satin or semi-gloss for trim and cabinets, which take more knocks.
  3. Buy it all at once. Tints can vary slightly between batches. If you need several gallons, buy them together, or mix them in a bucket ("boxing") before you start.
  4. Don't forget the ceiling. A crisp white ceiling sharpens Celery. A pale blue ceiling with Grounded is Behr's own suggestion.

Ready to plan yours? Put your room size into the paint calculator and it gives you gallons, quarts, primer, tape and a shopping list you can print.
